The 100 Reasons Why There Ain't No Mexican Super-heroes...is a series of gags (or cartoons if you like to call them like that) that I made between 1998 and 1999,using pencils and common sheets of copy paper.
It all started just for fun.Mexico is a surrealist country,one that also is though,primitive,charming and very ironic by itself.There are a lot of everyday problems within it...maybe too much problems.And it is bizarre to think if there would ever be a superhero willing to fix everything —he would either be all mighty or simply very stupid to do that.
So,there was the starting question: Why there are no superheroes in Mexico?
The answer is right here —the funny one,at least.
I drew this gag series while waiting at lines in the bank,at lines for buying tortillas,while traveling by subway and by bus,during spare time in between classes at school,and while waiting in many offices —because of that,art ain't exactly excellent,but I like to think it is compensated with the spontaneity of the jokes.
At first,basically it was just a personal —and silly— exercise,so I didn't plan to draw more than 5 or 10 pieces.But when I started showing the sheets of paper among my friends and acquaintances,things changed:many of them asked me for xeroxes of the gags,and started asking me about if I would include this or that character,and if I would resist doing more than 30 or 50 cartoons,etc.And well,I kept drawing them cartoons and I started taking more care on the art and the ironies (surely you'll notice that as the gags progress).
Some time later I self-published the cartoons in a photocopy fanzine I used to make.
And when I couldn't keep supplying more photocopies,I published them online.Originally I put them in a GeoCities website,and then I moved them here on Blogspot,in a new version with English translations and notes.
FAQ
Why use only pencils? Couldn't you ink them? Or how about drawing them again?
As I said above,it originally was a personal exercise made on common copy paper.For the earlier cartoons I didn't plan to draw them in a proper way;and for the later ones I choose to keep drawing them like that in name of the spontaneity of the jokes as I were getting joke ideas (by the way,many of the cartoons predicted 2 or 3 situations that actually did happen later on real comic books).
For this online version I cleaned and sharpened the images up a little so they were clearer to see in a monitor,but besides that,I tried to keep the cartoons as similar as possible as the original sketches.
Why Blogger?
I know there are better options for publishing comics and cartoons,but Blogger is free and I already had an unused Google account (besides the fact that I'm a firm believer in DIY,and I got inspired by exactly watching some other persons already using Blogger for publishing their comics).
Why only 100 reasons?
Because I like even numbers

Is Doriancito a self-portrait as a kid?
Oddly,too many people think so.Although Doriancito certainly does share one or two things with my personality,the truth is that he's a 100% fictional character.

Las 100 Razones Por Las Cuales No Existen Superhéroes Mexicanos...son una serie de gags ("cartones" o "caricaturas" para los perfeccionistas del lenguaje hispano) que hice entre 1998 y 1999,en hojas de papel bond común y corriente tamaño carta,a lápiz.
Todo empezó por simples ganas de molestar.México es un país surrealista,rudo,primitivo,encantador y muy irónico de sí.Hay mucha problemática...demasiada probablemente.Y pues resulta extraño pensar que tal vez algún día hubiera un superhéroe que se animara a resolver tanto lío —sería,o muy sácale-punta,o de plano muy idiota para hacerlo.
De ahí,surgió la duda inicial ¿Porqué no hay superhéroes en México?
La respuesta está aquí —la chistosa,por lo menos.
Esta serie de gags los dibujé en filas del banco,para comprar tortillas,viajes en el metro y microbús,horas ahorcadas entre clase y clase,y salas de espera en oficinas varias —en consecuencia el trabajo gráfico no es precisamente excelente,que conste;aunque igual todo se compensa con la espontaneidad de los chistes.
En un inicio,básicamente fue un ejercicio personal simple —y simplón— por lo que no pensaba sobrepasar las 5 o 10 entregas.Pero al ir rolando las hojas de papel entre amigos y conocidos,la cosa cambió:me pidieron fotocopias,qué cuando incluía a tal o cual héroe,que si aguantaría hacer más de 30 o 50,etc.Y pues nada,seguí haciéndolas y empecé a pulirme con el arte y el humor (ni hace falta que lo diga:se notará progresivamente al ver los gags).
Algún tiempo después las autoedité en fotocopias,en un fanzine gratuito que solía hacer.
Y cuando no me dí abasto para seguir sacando fotocopias,opté por trepar las imágenes a la red.En un inicio a través de un sitio de GeoCities,y actualmente a través de Blogspot,en una nueva versión con traducciones y anotaciones.

¿Porqué dibujar sólo a lápiz? ¿No podías entintarlas? ¿No podías rehacerlas?
Como dije líneas arriba,originalmente era un ejercicio personal en hojas comunes de papel para escribir.A las primeras nunca planeé darles un acabado formal;y para las subsecuentes decidí no hacerlo en nombre de la espontaneidad con que se me ocurrían los chistes (que por cierto,muchos luego acabaron prediciendo 2 o 3 situaciones que acabaron ocurriendo en los comics).
Para esta versión online,limpié y retoqué un poco las imágenes para hacerlas más nítidas,pero fuera de eso,procuré que se vieran lo más similar posible a los dibujos originales.
¿Porqué usar Blogger?
Sé que hay opciones mejores para publicar comics y cartones,pero Blogger es gratis y ya tenía una cuenta de Google sin usar (aparte de que soy firme creyente del DIY,y a fin de cuentas precisamente me inspiré viendo a otras gentes usando Blogger para difundir sus comics).
¿Porqué sólo 100 razones?
Por que me gustan las cifras redondas.

¿Doriancito es un autorretrato en forma de niño?
Curiosamente,mucha gente cree eso.Pero aunque Doriancito ciertamente tiene uno o dos rasgos de mi personalidad,la verdad es que se trata de un caracter 100% ficticio.
